Still Checking

I've got it now. I want to say that up front. I've got it. It's fine. It's there.

And I still do the thing at the till where I check before it goes through.

Not the amount. I know the amount. I check that the amount is still true.

I know what a letter looks like through the frosted bit of a door.

I can tell one at about ten feet by the little window in the front of it.

And I don't get those anymore, and I still come in sideways.

It leaves the bank a long time before it leaves the body.

Nobody tells you that bit.

You think the number goes up and the whole thing lets go —

it doesn't let go.

It just gets quieter and stays.

My daughter asked for something small in a shop and I said yes straight away,

and then I stood in the aisle for a second doing sums that were already done,

and she looked up at me, and I said "nothing," and we went and paid.

She's not going to know how to do this.
