Coats On

We said goodbye an hour ago, and we are still at the door.

Coats on. Everybody's coats on. Nobody sitting down.

My uncle's doing the one about the van. We have all heard the one about the van.

And nobody's leaving, and nobody's saying why.

There's a rule about this. You can't say "I don't want to go home yet."

So instead you say "right." And then you say "right" again. And then you don't move.

And then somebody starts a new story, which is against the rules, and everybody's delighted.

Coats on.

Hand on the door.

The best conversation of the year, in a hallway, in a coat.

Coats on.

Nobody's tired.

Nobody's going to be the one to open it.

My mum's been standing up for ages and won't sit down, because that's giving in.

And somebody puts the hall light on, which is a threat, and we all ignore it.

And eventually we go. And we do the entire thing again in the car park.
