Got Better

You were incredible when it was bad. I want that said first.

You were the one who came. You were the one who stayed on the phone.

You knew the names of all my tablets before I did.

And you didn't get bored of it, which I still can't account for.

And then it lifted. Slowly, and then all at once, the way they say.

And I rang you to tell you, and I heard it land wrong.

There was a pause where the good news should have gone.

And you said "that's great," and you have not lied to me before.

I got better.

And you got quiet.

And I've been trying for a while now to make that mean something else.

I got better.

And you got quiet.

Turns out I was the thing you were doing.

And I'm not calling you a bad person. You'd have taken a bullet for me.

There just wasn't a job in it once I could get up on my own.

You want somebody sinking. You're brilliant at somebody sinking.

And I'm standing here being boring, and I'm sorry about that.
